How to Easily Move a Piano Up and Down Stairs - The Best Way to Move a Piano Up or Down Stairs
07/01/2024
In this video, Stumpf Moving & Storage takes you behind the scenes to see how an upright piano is moved down three stories, 62 steps, without an elevator! To top it off, Stumpf Moving & Storage's professional piano movers preform this move with just two movers. Once inside the moving truck, our piano movers explain how to secure a piano into a moving truck. Whether you're a professional piano mover or a homeowner planning a piano move, this video offers valuable insight into understanding how your piano move should and will be performed.
As Pittsburgh's trusted piano mover since 1936, we are contacted to perform the most difficult pianos moves in Western Pennsylvania. We are consistently moving pianos up and down large quantities of stairs and even using cranes to lift pianos in and out of hard-to-reach spaces. So, when we received the phone call regarding this particular piano move, we knew it would be no problem whatsoever. Our customer let us know right away that the piano was located on the third floor of his apartment building. As the conversation continued, we learned that this apartment building provided quite a challenge to most other "piano movers" in our area. He explained that his building was an old school. The school had been transformed into an apartment building, but it did not have an elevator. The piano was located on the third floor and had to be moved down 62 steps! We reassured him that this is no problem whatsoever for us, and we scheduled the move.
We sent Sean and Josh to perform this move. Upon arrival they both assessed the piano and the stairs. Once they had an understanding of what was needed to perform the move, Sean and Josh began pad wrapping and protecting the piano for the move. The piano was wrapped with three large moving pads held on by two large rubber bands. Sean and Josh then placed the piano onto a piano board and secured the piano to the board with rachet straps. Piano boards are used to move pianos up and down stairs. The board is waxed, similar to skis or snowboards, to allow for a reduction in friction as the piano is moved up or down stairs. The piano board acts as a sled while the piano is moved up or down stairs. The movers will literally push the piano upstairs or slide the piano downstairs depending upon the direction they are going. The piano board gives movers a safe and stable platform to perform the piano move. Once the piano was secured onto the piano board Sean and Josh began moving the piano down the stairs. They begin the move by siding the piano down the first set of stairs. Once at the bottom Sean and Josh place the piano onto a dolly. The piano is "on end" meaning the piano is on its side. This was done to move the piano around the tight corner Sean and Josh faced. Sean and Josh then maneuver the piano to the second set of stairs. They set the piano back down to its normal position and place it onto a dolly. With help from their dolly, they are able to line the piano up and prepare it for the next set of stairs. The move goes on like this until Sean and Josh finally reach the first floor with the piano. Once on the first floor Sean and Josh take the piano out of the building and load it onto the Stumpf truck waiting outside. Once on the truck Sean explains how the piano is strapped down and secured for transport.
